Sarah Burke, a 29 year old freestyle half pipe skier passed away yesterday, January 19, succumbing to injuries sustained in a horrible training crash. Burke had a heart attack and the lack of oxygen and blood to her brain left her in a coma, which she did not wake up from.
Burke lobbied for half pipe to be included in the Olympics, and her dream came true when it was announced that the 2014 games in Sochi would include it. The 4 time X Games gold medalist was considered the favourite, and it is a tragedy for the sport and skiers and snowboarders worldwide. Burke was considered as a role model to many women entering free skiing, and her camps helped improve skills and give dreams to all ski hill enthusiasts.
